Why I think everyone should give meditating a go!

FINALLY! I’m back to writing a blog and really want to make a shot at it this time. I took some time off so I could sort my life out but now I’m back for good! I’ve decided to give it a make-over and even a new name… hope you all like it.

So, on to the subject of today’s post...MEDITATING and why I think everyone should try it. Since we began 2017 I started meditating twice a day; in the evening before bed and in the morning when I wake up. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve mocked people before who say they love meditating and snickered at the ‘chessiness’ of it but now I’ve turned into a meditating goddess.
Don’t mock it till you’ve tried it kids. With social media, the internet, work and the general stress of everyday life taking up most of my time I rarely ever have time to sit down and relax. With auditions not going my way and the stress of having a day job I hate, I did anything to avoid having ‘me’ time and then forgot entirely how to do it. So I thought I’d give meditation a shot, and oh my god was I wrong to mock it before. It’s an amazing way to end the day and an incredible thing to wake up to.

In the evening meditating leaves me free from my phone (although I do use an app to guide me through meditation). We are all guilty of the saying ‘I’m going to have an early night’ and then spending the next hour or so scrolling through instagram or filling up a basket with stuff that we can’t even afford. I wanted to stop this in 2017, it often leaves me unable to sleep, fidgety and/or even wide-awake.

The general way I perform meditating is the same for both times of the day. In the evening I get into bed; lights off and alarm set. I sit up straight with my back against the pillows and allow myself to get comfortable. I open my app, press play, turn my phone over so it is dark and the meditation then begins. It does depend what type of meditation you use, for example you can choose calming ones or stress less ones to even meditating for happiness ones. You start most of the sessions off by closing your eyes and concentrating on your breathing. Before leading on to your thoughts and how your body is feeling. Now, I’m not going to go through the entire process with you because I want you to give it ago for yourself and not have pre-judgements like I did. My sessions last 10 to 15 minutes and I feel that it is more than enough time to leave me feeling calm and ready to sleep.

The next part is the tricky part!!! You can begin opening your eyes when told to do so. This is the end of your session so you should straight away turn OFF your phone and leave it (in my case) on the floor beside your bed before closing your eyes and trying to sleep straight away. When I have forgotten to meditate I can now see a massive difference in the ability to sleep, and I will admit that of course I’ve forgotten to meditate on numerous occasions. When I have meditated I often fall asleep straight away and barely wake up until my alarm, when I have NOT meditated it takes me a while to switch off, I get distracted with my phone and I often wake up multiple times throughout the night (this doesn’t happen every time but i’ve just become more aware of my sleep patterns when I do not meditate). I’m not saying it will work for everyone I am just simply celebrating the effects it has had on me, my mind and my body. I’m just trying to convince you all that there is no harm in trying it! If you want to start the day feeling refreshed, motivated and happy then I strongly advise you at least give it ago! I absolutely LOVE meditating now and have made it part of my routine to do so.

The Apps I use are on the app store; headspace and calm and they are free of charge. Some Apps also give you ‘7 days of happiness’ which are free but after the 7 days you have to pay. So I strongly recommend starting with these to see how you like it! ALSO you can move on to YouTube videos of meditation as well which are equally as good. But I recommended starting with the calm app, it's brilliant!

Please let me know if any of you decide to try out meditating, have any different apps you use and especially if you’ve become part of the meditating goddess tribe!

Thank-you for reading.

Until next time, Bx
